Software Testing Tutorial Types of Software Testing

What is Software Testing

Software Testing is a method to check whether the actual software product matches expected requirements and to ensure that software product is Defect free. It involves execution of software/system components using manual or automated tools to evaluate one or more properties of interest. The purpose of software testing is to identify errors, gaps or missing requirements in contrast to actual requirements.

what is software testing

Software testing is a process of identifying the correctness of software by considering its all attributes (Reliability, Scalability, Portability, Re-usability, Usability) and evaluating the execution of software components to find the software bugs or errors or defects. Software testing is widely used technology because it is compulsory to test each and every software before deployment.

Types of Software Testing

There are mainly two types of software testing, they are;

  • Manual Testing: Test Cases executed manually
  • Automation Testing: Testing performed with the help of automation tools.

Manual testing can be further divided into three types of testing, which are as follows:

  • White box testing:
  • Black box testing:
  • Gray box testing:

White box testing: White Box Testing is software testing technique in which internal structure, design and coding of software are tested to verify flow of input-output and to improve design, usability and security. In white box testing, code is visible to testers so it is also called Clear box testing, Open box testing, Transparent box testing, Code-based testing and Glass box testing.

Black box testing: Black Box Testing is a software testing method in which the functionalities of software applications are tested without having knowledge of internal code structure, implementation details and internal paths. Black Box Testing mainly focuses on input and output of software applications and it is entirely based on software requirements and specifications. It is also known as Behavioral Testing.

Gray box testing: Grey Box Testing or Gray box testing is a software testing technique to test a software product or application with partial knowledge of internal structure of the application. The purpose of grey box testing is to search and identify the defects due to improper code structure or improper use of applications.
